Authentic & Deliberate Leadership:
The West Point Way
Originally designed in 1978 by General Howard Prince and the staff of the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department at the United States Military Academy at West Point, this course has been redesigned by General Prince, Dr. Mitch Javidi, Dr. Dave Mather, and the faculty at the National Command and Staff College. “Authentic & Deliberate Leadership: The West Point Way” is now offered in multiple versions to meet agency and/or personnel needs (self-paced online, instructor led online, blended, and a comprehensive 3 week residency).
The course challenges participants to bring their artful experience leading others at any level of the organization and combine it with behavioral science theories which will improve the participant’s ability to enhance the motivation, satisfaction, and performance of their people.
This course is not intended to be theoretical; it is designed to be deliberately applied in the real world with real people using contemporary challenges in need of creative solutions. The foundation of the course is about understanding human behavior, including your own, and learning to lead people more effectively in a dynamic environment.

Participants would complete the online training (60 hrs.) and asynchronously (self-paced) engage with their peers through written posts designed to demonstrate an understanding of the concept. The posts would be monitored by an instructor and peers who would comment and constructively challenge one another. This option provides for the greatest schedule flexibility as each learner can progress at their desired rate.
The course includes a downloadable textbook, multi-media lectures, discussion boards and quizzes.
Participants will receive a certificate for 60 hrs. of eLearning from the National Command and Staff College and the Criminal Justice Commission for Credible Leadership Development upon the successful completion of the course.

This option provides a great experience for participants and is the most popular with busy learners. It is similar to the INSTRUCTOR LED ONLINE COURSE tab above, but culminates in a five-day (40 hrs.) residency with peers facilitated by a senior member of the faculty in place of online meetings.
Participants join a cohort of peers and complete the online training together over 12 weeks with an assigned instructor. During the 12 weeks, participants engage each week with their cohort members through assigned posts. When participants have successfully completed all online coursework, they attend the highly interactive residency at a pre-determined location**
This option provides the perfect balance of flexibility for participants who can complete weekly assignments anytime during the week with a deep dive into application of the strategies in the real world during the residency.

This option is the premium experience with Authentic & Deliberate Leadership: The West Point Way and is the most time intensive. Each week of in-person instruction focuses on a specific set of theories from the material. Participants are required to read and respond to assignments prior to the in-person session.
Prior to the course itself, the primary instructor coordinates with the organization to solicit key leadership challenges faced by the attendees, so those areas are emphasized during the training. This option allows the instructors to tailor the conversations to specific leadership challenges faced within the agency (or region when multiple agencies participate together).
The focus of this option of the training is implementation of the concepts in the material to enable participants to create a more participative, engaged culture throughout their organization.
Delivered in three, one-week sessions approximately one month apart, participants attend each session with the same cohort and are assigned to a specific learning team for the duration of the program.
The course includes a downloadable textbook, multi-media lectures, discussion boards, quizzes, and three mandatory one-week residencies.
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate for 180 hrs. of instruction, a MAGNUS GLADIO pin and medallion. The names of these MAGNUS GLADIO are permanently registered with the National Command and Staff College and the Criminal Justice Commission for Credible Leadership Development as having achieved the highest level of academic achievement in this work.
